Baker Building Wedding | Sam + John
“We were having an early morning stroll through the Portland Japanese Garden. When we got to our favourite spot, John set up a tripod to take a picture of us.” - Sam
“I almost always have a film camera when we go, but this time I brought a tripod and set it up with shaking hands - set the timer, walked up, dropped to one knee and definitely surprised her!” - John

“The photo captured the perfect moment!” - Sam
“She said yes, we both cried, and then wandered around the gardens as fiances. It was a really wonderful morning.” - John
After the proposal, Sam and John headed to a local bar to have celebratory drinks - it was at that same, local dive bar that they had their first date after meeting on OkCupid, and ended up talking for seven hours.
It’s no secret that I’m a sucker for photographing weddings that are just a little outside the box, so a few months later when I met up with Sam and John at a Portland brewery, I knew we would be a good fit after hearing their really personal plans and vision for their wedding day - a hanging floral arch, pies in lieu of wedding cake, and guests seated at their tables to enjoy fresh fruit, beer and wine throughout the ceremony instead of traditional ceremony seating. In Sam’s words, “We wanted it to feel a bit like a big family dinner.”
One of my own favourite details of their wedding was the custom invitations, bottle labels, and stickers that John designed - he’s an incredibly talented creative, designer, illustrator, and photographer (no pressure, right?!) - you can sneak some of his work here.
Sam and John’s wedding day was beautifully personal and a truly joyous occasion - I felt so honoured to capture their memories while surrounded by their fantastic friends and family on one of the very best days of their lives!
Thank you to everyone who helped make Sam + John’s vision
for their very personal wedding day come to life:
